“Sex and the City” fans, rejoice indeed! Kim Cattrall will return to her legendary role as Samantha Jones in the Season 2 finale of Max’s adaptation of HBO’s “Sex and the City,” “And Just Like That”.
The Scene
She will, however, only show up in one scene, without seeing or conversing with the series’ performers, including Sarah Jessica Parker, or with “And Just Like That” creator Michael Patrick King. Cattrall reportedly, according to Variety, filmed her lines on March 22 in New York City.
The Reconciliation
The scene plays out with Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw and Samantha, who in the show has relocated to London, will converse on the phone. As you may recall in the first season of “And Just Like That,” Carrie spoke via text with Samantha, and in the season’s finale, they decided to meet up in person and make things right.
The renowned “Sex and the City” costume designer Patricia Field, who hasn’t been working on “And Just Like That,” outfitted Samantha for her part.
No Continuation
Cattrall’s portrayal of Samantha will not be ongoing. However, fans of “Sex and the City” who have been yearning for even a glimpse of Samantha, the adored, powerful publicist who put the “sex” in the series that aired on HBO for six seasons (1998 to 2004), and inspired two movies, would undoubtedly be thrilled by her reappearance in any form.
A Public Fallout
In 2016, Cattrall made the announcement that she was done playing Samantha, as she didn’t believe that the script for a potential third film adequately portrayed the character. This led to Parker and Cattrall’s public rift. Cattrall was not asked to reprise her role as Samantha when King and Parker wanted to do a reboot of the “Sex and the City” series with HBO Max in 2021. Other characters were introduced to fill the void. Some fans were not happy.
Parker and King both expressed that they could not imagine a situation in which Cattrall would reprise her role as Samantha when doing press junkets the previous year. But Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max programming, contacted Cattrall about resuming her role as Samantha while “And Just Like That” was filming in New York this past winter, and Cattrall said yes.
Even though the second season of “And Just Like That” debuts on June 22, Cattrall’s Samantha-related scene won’t be shown until August.
Who else is excited about Cattrall’s return? It may only be for one scene, but undoubtedly the fans will take whatever they can get! All in all, it’s good to see them together again.
