It was the first look,” Da Brat said. “When I turned around and saw her carriage, I was like, ‘Oh my God, you look so beautiful.’”

Dupart surprised Da Brat with a honeymoon vacation to the Turks and Caicos.

It sounds like their wedding was an epic event. Now the couple is back with another epic event, they are expecting tier first child. The couple, who initially informed People of the news, discussed their journey to becoming parents and their experiences of pregnancy later in life.”It’s been quite a journey,” Da Brat, whose real name is Shawntae Harris-Dupart, said. “There’s a lot of stuff we learned about women over the age of 40.”

‘I never thought I was going to have kids’

“It started as a joke, we were like, ‘We’re extending our family!'” Da Brat said. “But then we got a huge response. It was like, ‘Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!'”

“I never thought I was going to have kids,” Da Brat said. “I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”

“I started looking at life so differently,” she added, mentioning that Harris-Dupart helped change her outlook on motherhood. “I was like, I want a little me with you. Something special from the both of us that we can share and raise and love unconditionally.”

At first, Da Brat was hesitant about carrying the child herself, but she and Jesseca ultimately decided that Da Brat should have the experience due to the health complications Harris-Dupart faced after her egg retrieval.

“We had a bit of a disagreement in the beginning… yet I felt it would be a great way for her to experience it,” Harris-Dupart said.

Before the embryo transfer procedure, Da Brat faced her own health issues such as having to have surgery to remove fibroids and polyps, growths in the uterus that are typically noncancerous. Women who have fibroids may likely experience difficulties during pregnancy and delivery, according to the Office on Women’s Health.

During the course of their pregnancy, however, Da Brat experienced a miscarriage. “I was so excited about something I didn’t even realize I wanted,” Da Brat noted. “But then it was suddenly taken away from me.”

In spite of the miscarriage, the couple kept going with the few eggs they had left from an anonymous donor from their cryo bank. As of now, Da Brat is 18 weeks pregnant and she views the entire thing as a “blessing”.

As Da Brat and her wife prepare to welcome their child into the world, Da Brat said pregnancy has been an interesting experience for her.

“Everything makes me cry,” she said. “If someone wins ‘American Idol,’ I cry. I’m like, I’m tougher than that!”

We are so excited for Da Brat and her wife Jesseca Dupart, and wish them a healthy happy pregnancy and delivery.
