Iam Tongi, a high school student from Kahuku, Hawaii, recently delivered a powerful performance on “American Idol” that left the judges and audience in tears. Tongi’s performance was an emotional rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” while strumming his acoustic guitar. The “Showstopper” audience gave him a burst of applause before the venue watched in awe.
Tongi has been a fan favorite since his initial audition last month. He performed a beautiful rendition of “Monsters” by James Blunt that left all three judges in tears.
Since the “Showstopper” performance was shared on April 10, the video has 3.5 million views on YouTube, with many people commenting on Tongi’s emotional backstory. The contestant’s father passed away a few years ago, and Tongi’s mother said that his dad became sick and realized that “his days were limited.” They started recording videos of Tongi singing with his father a few months before he passed away, which Tongi turns to a lot and plays while he sleeps.
While Tongi performed, his mother shared his emotional backstory, which made judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan visibly emotional. Perry and Richie shared tissues while watching the performance.
After Tongi finished singing, the teen received a standing ovation and said, “I love you, Mom!” into the microphone. Perry was then seen speaking to Tongi and telling him that “The Sound of Silence” song choice was “brilliant.” She let Tongi know that he had earned a spot in the Top 24.
Perry then announced that this season of “American Idol” will actually have a Top 26, and that two other contestants, Colin Stough and Matt Wilson, have also made it to the next round.
Tongi’s emotional performance resonated with viewers and showcased his talent and vulnerability. Many people commented that he doesn’t just sing lyrics; he feels them and lives them. Tongi’s humility, kindness, and honesty shone through in his performance, and he proved to be a beautiful human being with an amazing gift.
The Power of Music
Tongi’s performance was a reminder of the power of music to move people and bring them together. As Perry said, “This is what this show is all about.” Tongi’s journey on “American Idol” continues, and viewers will undoubtedly be rooting for him as he moves forward in the competition.
