During a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, Drew Barrymore openly discussed her history and struggle with substance abuse. It got so bad at one point that her therapist, Barry Michels, no longer wanted to treat her due to her excessive drinking. She turned to alcohol following the end of her marriage to Will Kopelman in 2016. She and Kopelman married in 2012 and have two daughters.
Friends of the actress gave her a “grace period” to heal, but in the end, they organized an intervention to confront her about her drinking problem. Cameron Diaz, a close friend of Barrymore’s, said that watching her struggle was “difficult to watch,” but that she had “absolute faith” that Barrymore could get sober with the proper support. Diaz has been a close friend of Barrymore’s since the ’90s.
Ending the struggle with substance abuse
The E.T. actress did not decide to give up drinking on her own. In 2019, after the first episode of The Drew Barrymore Show wrapped filming, she realized that she needed to be in a clear head space in order to handle it all. She tried to meet with her old therapist, two years after he had ended their professional relationship. He agreed to see her once again. Barrymore told The Los Angeles Times about the difficult time she had been going through and how, at this point in her life, her primary focus is being a good mother to her two daughters, Olive and Frankie.
Barrymore has dealt with addiction for years. In 1990, she published her memoir, “Little Girl Lost.” She wrote of her troubled childhood and teenage years and discussed how she tried to overcome her addiction and rebuild her life.
The 50 First Dates star has also spoken about the challenges of staying sober in the public eye. In an essay published in her monthly magazine, Drew, she wrote about the importance of detachment and self-care, and the difficulty of navigating criticism and competition in Hollywood.
Despite these challenges, she remains committed to her sobriety and to help others on their paths to recovery. She has shown strength and resilience in her efforts to overcome it and I applaud her.
